Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better recognized under the stage name Queen Latifah. in film, music and television, Queen Latifah has received 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nods and nominations for the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah grew up in Newark, NJ. Her parents are Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's mother and father separated after Latifah was ten years old. Latifah lived within the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah is an Arabic term that translates to "delicate and compassionate". The cousin she had granted it to her in the age of eight. Latifah has always been tall and tall. Standing 5'10", she was the center forward on her high school basketball team. She sang the song home from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah started beatboxing for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah was one of the members of the original model of the Flavor Unit which at that time consisted of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded the rap of Queen Latifah, aka Princess of the Posse. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song, and then signed Latifah in 1988 to release her debut track Wrath of My Madness.
